Our time to be together for each other is before and after the time on site. When we are on site, we are there to be with the people we came to serve. Unless we have some immediate administrative questions to ask each other, we shouldn't be talking to each other. This is part of being “on duty.” All of us are on duty the whole time we are on site. The last thing we want to happen is for us, mostly white, volunteers to be standing or sitting around in a group talking to each other and the people we came to serve, mostly black, to be talking to each other, with an ocean of social distance between the groups. We came to bridge that distance.
